Resources Minister calls on states to support national gas reservation scheme

The Resources Minister is calling on the states to support gas development as the government aims to drive down power prices with a national gas reservation scheme.

The government is looking to increase domestic gas supply with a national gas reservation scheme in Australia’s east.

Victoria currently has a moratorium on conventional gas exploration.

Resources Minister Matt Canavan tells Ross Greenwood they are taking inspiration from Western Australia and need co-operation from the states.

“In West Australia, there is a gas reservation scheme, it requires 15 per cent of the gas produced in Western Australia to stay domestically.

“We will need the states and territories to remove unnecessary restriction on gas development.

“There’s no point having a reservation scheme if we don’t have a production scheme.”
