‘Quite dangerous’: QLD Resources Council CEO warns against cancelling mining contracts without compensation

The Adani mine could be blocked and denied compensation after the Greens proposed a bill to ban mining in the Galilee Basin.

State Greens MP Michael Berkman put forward the retrospective bill to ban coal mining.

CEO of the Queensland Resources Council Ian Macfarlane tells John Stanley the move could “severely impact on our foreign investment status.”

“We rely very heavily on foreign investment.

“To take away a right would be viewed very dimly.”

He says where leases have been cancelled in the past compensation has been granted.

“It would be very significant and quite dangerous by any government to cancel a mining lease.”
