Women burn headscarves as anti-hijab protests erupt in Iran

John Stanley

John Stanley speaks to Dr. Kylie Moore-Gilbert about female protesters who have been at the forefront of escalating protests in Iran, women have been burning headscarves, sparked by the death in custody of a woman Mahsa Amini, who was detained for breaking hijab laws.

A scholar of Middle Eastern and Islamic studies, Dr. Moore-Gilbert spent 804 days in an Iranian prison, enduring solitary confinement, psychological torture, and degrading dehumanising treatment at the hands of her captors for a crime that she did not commit.

Dr. Moore-Gilbert highlights how incredibly brave these women are to stand up to this regime.

“These women are so fed up and exasperated, they’re at their wit’s end, they’re desperate and it takes these kinds of acts to express their desperation,” says Dr. Moore-Gilbert.
