Volkswagen’s compact T-Cross SUV – a little expensive but highly equipped for the money
Driving Volkswagen’s relatively new T-Cross SUV today – the first German entrant in the light or compact SUV class – based on the VW Polo platform a front wheel drive powered by a 1.0-litre 85kW turbo three-cylinder petrol engine driving through a seven-speed DSG automatic. Two models, the T-Cross Life at $27,990, the better-equipped T-Cross Style which I tested at $30,990. The test car in Turquoise metallic paint adding $800 while a Sound and Vision option and an R-Line styling package took the all up price to $36,190, not inexpensive and pushing into larger SUV territory.
Having said that the Volkswagen T-Cross SUV is a classy compact SUV with a spacious interior, excellent rear seat legroom, a super three-cylinder engine, you’ve heard me extol the virtues of three-cylinder turbo engines before and this one is a cracker although it does need dearer 95RON fuel. Importantly it rides like a larger SUV and looks especially classy in its R-line livery with larger 18-inch alloys. The T- Cross Style features dual zone climate control, paddle gear shifters, chrome roof rails, adaptive cruise control, blind spot and rear cross traffic alert so it’s highly equipped for the money. The option pack further adds an excellent digital drive display, integrated navigation and a top spec Beats audio system. The VW T-Cross a rather classy European compact SUV.
