New evidence of devastating prawn disease
Fresh concerns about White Spot Disease being detected in imported prawns have been flagged this week.
The Agriculture Department has cast serious doubt over tests from the University of the Sunshine Coast, claiming they’re from before enhanced import conditions were introduced.
However, a study commissioned by Australian Prawn Farmers has detected imported uncooked prawns available for retail sale in areas around Queensland’s Logan River infected with White Spot Disease.
Those results have been passed onto the Agriculture Department, which has been in contact with the importer, and is currently undertaking a third round of testing.
Rural reporter Eddie Summerfield caught up with Future Fisheries Vet Service Director Dr Matt Landos.
