Mixed forecast for farming in latest commodities report

Rural News

The latest agricultural commodities report has delivered a mixed bag of results for the 2017/18 financial year.

Poor climate conditions in grain growing areas has seen a 7% drop in the total value of farm production, following record breaking yields the year before.

It could lead to a decline of about three per cent in total export earnings, mainly thanks to forecast declines in chickpeas, sugar, wheat, canola and barley.

Rural reporter Roshai Murdoch spoke with ABARES Executive Director Doctor Steve Hatfield-Dodds about the report, and what to expect.
