Talking further about Mitsubishis’ Eclipse Cross SUV – A sporty looking addition to Mitsubishi’s SUV fleet that includes ASX, Outlander, Pajero Sport and Pajero. Sitting on the same platform as the ASX the Eclipse Cross comes in 2 2WD models and one 4WD – all are powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol driving though a CVT automatic – a rather advanced automatic that has manual override with eight step points and featuring paddle shifters. I tested the top grade Exceed 2WD at 36,000 – there’s much to like about the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and several dislikes – for example I find the sloping rear with split glass a little too fussy. Importantly, 55 per cent of its structure is from high strength steel, it has a local five-star crash safety rating and it feels torsionally rigid . The engine is a delightful unit with nice torque and with the automatic in sports mode with an available 8 manual ratios it’s a very enjoyable driver. Certainly the Eclipse Cross in more expensive than others in the small SUV segment however it’s better equipped and comes with a full suite of active safety features. The frontal appearance is particularly appealing, the build quality excellent and the cabin has a premium feel. The 2WD Exceed as tested wants for nothing in comfort items including leather trim, dual-zone air, a double panoramic sunroof. Push it hard on a fast winding road and it can feel a little stretched but in most situations the ride/handling balance is nicely sorted. I’m David Berthon
