Mazda CX 5: the right package size
Talking SUV this weekend – first up, a local drive of Mazda’s new mid-sized CX-5 SUV –the CX-5 our most popular SUV under $60,000 so an important update. The second generation series comprises five different models Mazda suggesting it’s a new dimension in driving pleasure that can be shared with everyone not just the driver. I drove the top-line 2.2-litre turbo-diesel Akera at $49,990 and the 2.5-litre turbo-petrol Maxx Sport at $37,390– both six-speed automatic. Both models were noticeably quieter to the previous model – the diesel has 420Nm of torque, the petrol, 251Nm – around town the diesel was the nicer driver– the max torque achieved at 2000 revs where you do most of your driving. The petrol engine’s maximum torque achieved higher at 4000 revs where it gets a little buzy under hard acceleration. The Mazda CX- 5 has excellent space utilization for five adults, the right package size – the Maxx Sport the grade to own with some nice touches. I’m David Berthon
