From the early 1900s until the late 1960s Aboriginals were forced to live under ‘Protection Acts’. These acts were introduced to ‘protect and care’ the Aboriginal community.

Under this regime all Indigenous workers pay slips were sent to government-administered accounts. The belief at the time was Indigenous people were unable to handle their money, so someone else had to look after it for them.
