Indigenous Australians ‘waiting on stolen wages’

John Stanley

From the early 1900s until the late 1960s Aboriginals were forced to live under ‘Protection Acts’. These acts were introduced to ‘protect and care’ the Aboriginal community.

Under this regime all Indigenous workers pay slips were sent to government-administered accounts. The belief at the time was Indigenous people were unable to handle their money, so someone else had to look after it for them.

Indigenous commentator Warren Mundine penned an article in The Australian about this very topic and joins John Stanley to shed more light on this issue.
