Indian tariff tiff

Rural News

Grain growers are facing increasing uncertainty thanks to two tariff hikes by one of our biggest trade partners.

Just before Christmas, the Indian Government introduced a 30 percent tariff on all chickpea and lentil imports impacting about 200,000 tonnes or $150 million worth of produce.

It saw new Agriculture Minister, David Littleproud travel to India negotiating notice would be given to any future tariff increases.

But last week without warning the Indian Government raised the tariff to 40 percent.

Rural reporter Eddie Summerfield spoke with Victorian Farmers Federation Grains President Ross Johns.
