Hyundai’s pure electric IONIQ 5 SUV 2

DAVID BERTHON

Driving the new top tier Hyundai Epiq pure electric dual motor IONIQ 5 SUV – this
flagship model takes pricing to $91,000 drive-away. As I said earlier the Epiq
gains a larger 77.4kW/hour battery with a longer range claimed at 454km. Its dual
motor means a weight gain over the entry single motor Dynamiq model. Hyundai
claim it has new ride and handling tune but using my old test bed of the dreadful
M2 Motorway, the extra weight unfortunately produces some small bump
harshness. The Epiq gains a fixed full length well shaded sunroof which gives the
IONIQ 5 cabin a great feel, and also a new so-called innovation from Hyundai,
camera based rear view mirrors with interior angled screens atop the doors. A
most useless addition and unfortunately the cameras don’t relate a true position
of approaching cars nor in a parking sense a true line of sight – simply
technology for technology’s sake and thankfully the two lower grade IONIQ 5’s
maintain normal mirrors. I much prefer the lighter and impressive entry single
motor Dynamiq IONIQ 5 – a much nicer ride and now with extra range at $74,500
drive-away. But supply somewhat restricted and you may have a wait to get one.
