Double demerit points could put your license in jeopardy this weekend
Driving in Victoria last week I was surprised to learn their road toll this year has reached 139, 51 more than last year, a 36 per cent increase. But what staggered me was the fact in 12 of the fatalities the driver or passenger was not wearing a seat belt. Having witnessed it in a Mercedes-Benz test laboratory the seat belt is an absolute necessity ā and to see what actually happens to an unrestrained child or adult in a head-collision will live in your memory for some time. This weekend is double demerits points and the police have stated they will be targeting seat belt usage ā normally for a driver not wearing a seat belt the fine is $339 and 3 demerit points, this weekend the demerits rise to 6 points. However, drive with three unrestrained passengers and the fine rises to $1,085 and 6 demerits, this weekend however its 12 points and you also say good bye to your license. Food for thought!
