Calls for Sydney to have a “night mayor”

Michael Mclaren

The Commission for a Night-time Economy has found that Sydney needs a “night mayor” or a “minister for night-time economy” to help revitalise Sydney’s dormant nightlife.

The new report ascertained that less than half of greater Sydney residents feel satisfied with current night life entertainment options. To remedy the situation, the recommendation is that the State Government looks to implement a central “coordinating figure” to revitalise the harbour city’s night-time economy.

“Our city does really tend to close down at a certain time,” says David Borger, Western Sydney director of the Sydney Business Chamber.

“It’s very hard to bring out the proverbial machete and hack through the red tape.  Our nightlife needs somebody who is really committed to doing it.”

It is hoped the new ministerial role will restore Sydney’s reputation as a global city.

The recommendation that lockout laws be re-evaluated and potentially relaxed has also been issued.

“Regulation is killing fun in this city,” says Mr Borger.
