BMW latest generation 330i sedan – much improved but with a sporty ride

Motor Torque

BMW’s new 3-series sedan arrived in the second half of last year – the G20 3-series a vastly improved package with very good looks – arriving in a premium medium car segment which is generally soft with SUV’s the more popular vehicle choice in this over $60,000 market. Mercedes C-Class still dominates here finishing the year with 6,798 sales compared to the second-placed BMW 3-series with 3,135. I tested the 2.0-litre turbo BMW 330i four-cylinder linked to an 8-speed ZF automatic – in standard trim $70,900 but fitted with an optional $2,000 M Sport plus package with adaptive suspension. For my money I wouldn’t buy this option – yes the four drive modes Comfort, Sport, Eco and Adaptive offer some welcome drive variation but the associated damper adustments in each mode generally provide an unsettling ride.

However it is for the most part a sports sedan – a very good looking one at that  with real styling flair and a nice interior with top seats. The interior a big step up from previous models – it feels quality in every way and purveys a premium air – the infotainment system and driver’s display top class. Servicing costs on BMW’s have always come in for scrutiny however 3-series buyers can opt for a pre-paid basic service cover of $1,565 for five-years or 80,000 k’s – whichever comes up first. An average of $313 per year which covers engine oil, filters, spark plugs, brake fluid and overal vehicle checks. Warranty – three-years, unlimited kilometre with three year roadside assistance.
