PM reveals wording of Voice referendum question

Ray Hadley & Deborah Knight

The official wording of the Voice to Parliament referendum question has been revealed.

“A proposed law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voice; do you support this proposed alteration?”

Cabinet this morning ratified the question and wording to be included in the constitution.

Mr Albanese said if the referendum vote is successful, the Voice will advise parliament and the executive government.

He said he hoped the referendum would receive “the strongest possible support from Australia”, and the wording was a result of consultation with communities across the country.

“It will not take decision-making power away from government or parliament.”

Opposition leader Peter Dutton joined Ray Hadley to react to the announcement.

Mr Dutton says the Liberal party room will meet next week to decide its stance.

The Voice would advise parliament and the executive on issues affecting Indigenous people.

But governments won’t have to accept its advice, and the body will not have spending power.

2GB Political report Michael Pachi told Deborah Knight, legislation to change the constitution will be introduced into parliament next week.

The Prime Minister is urging all sides of politics to back it.
