Peter Dutton’s concern as clock runs down for contentious deportation policy
Australia’s controversial 501 deportation policy will be at the top of the New Zealand Prime Minister’s agenda when she meets with Anthony Albanese in Sydney today.
Visa cancellations due to criminal activity or on character grounds under section 501 of the Migration Act has been a long-running pressure point with New Zealand.
Jacinda Ardern infamously took a swipe at former prime minister Scott Morrison over the policy in 2020, claiming the policy was “testing” the friendship between the two nations.
Ray Hadley suggested in a meeting of two leaders “cut from the same cloth”, Anthony Albanese will be “prevailed upon” to scrap the policy.
Opposition Leader and former home affairs minister Peter Dutton says he doesn’t want to see the Albanese government walk the policy back.
“It was right to deport them and we’re safer because of having done so,” he told Ray. “As you know, we tried to strengthen the laws, they wouldn’t support that.
“In Opposition, they were very weak on these deportations.”
