The Home Affairs Minister maintains national security investigations need to include journalists, arguing no one is above the law.

There have been calls for better protections for the media in the wake of Federal Police raids on the ABC and a Newscorp journalist last month.

A parliamentary inquiry into press freedom will examine the issue in more depth.

Peter Dutton believes the media are an important part of the democratic process, but tells Ray Hadley national security is also important.

“There are plenty of laws in place to protect whistleblowers.

“Nobody is doubting that the media are an important part of scrutiny of public policy, of decision-makers in this country.

“And that will always continue, it’s a very important part of our democracy.

“But people in our country – whether you’re the Prime Minister or the cleaner, you’re the footy player or the nurse – whatever your position in Australian society, the law applies equally to you.”
