Over 80,000 older Australians can’t find work

Australia experienced record jobs growth in 2017, but our older Aussies aren’t faring so well.

Around 80,000 Aussies aged over 55 couldn’t land a job.

Minister for Jobs and Innovation, Michaelia Cash, tells Chris Smith how their $110 million mature age employment package aims to upskill older Australians and get them into work.

“There’s going to be a really big focus on ensuring that mature age workers have the digital literacy skills that employers in 2018 do require.

“The young people of today, that’s the language they speak.”

From Monday until February 19, businesses can apply to be a part of a new career transition assistance program which will be trialled for two years.

“They will have proven their loyalty. We know they’re hardworking.

“They may need a little bit of assistance to come up to speed in terms of what we want in 2018 but…across Australia, the fact is for all of us we’re going to have to be working longer.”
