NSW Premier stands by stadium rebuild despite pushback

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is standing by a costly stadium rebuild despite resistance within her own ranks.

Ben Fordham pressed the Premier on whether the rebuild of ANZ and Allianz Stadiums, costing around $2.5 billion, will go ahead.

Ben: Are you still committing to knocking down and rebuilding both of those stadiums?

Premier: That’s our policy.

Ben: So is that a yes?

Premier: It is a yes. And I appreciate that I need to explain to the community why we’re doing that.

Premier Berejiklian admits not all her colleagues are on board when Ben asks whether there are “question marks in her own ranks”.

“And that’s appropriate and we’ve had that with every single major project we’ve delivered and every single major policy position we take,” she says.

Allianz Stadium has been placed under the microscope, with questions being raised about whether the stadium is safe when it has no fire sprinklers or enough exits.

The Premier says “band-aid” solutions are in place until the end of the year and that these are “sufficient”.
