NSW Police numbers will receive their biggest boost in over 30 years, with an extra 1500 officers set to join the force.

The $580-million initiative will see the total number of officers in the state rise above 18,000.

Each command will get an additional officer to monitor offenders on the child protection register.

An Elder Abuse Prevention Officer will also be added to every command.

New South Wales Police Minister Troy Grant tells Ben Fordham they hope to drive down rates of elder abuse.

“Unfortunately, it’s one of those crime types that’s growing,” he says.

The Police Association wanted an additional 2500 officers, but the Police Minister says he doesn’t believe we’re “short”.

“Over our term of government, this is now 2500 police that we will have committed to and delivered.”
