NSW Minister confirms controversial event hosting Taliban members cancelled

NSW Multiculturalism Minister Natalie Ward has confirmed a controversial event that would have hosted Taliban members has been cancelled.

The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils said the event would discuss “the future of Afghanistan and our role, regardless of whether we are in favour or against recent developments”.

The plan to allow two members of the Taliban to appear in a live webinar was widely condemned.

Minister Ward told Ray Hadley she was appalled by the decision.

“I rang and spoke with them directly this morning and said this needs to be shut down and they’ve agreed to do that.

“The event has been cancelled, they’ve assured me that it is not going ahead.”
