NSW Blues debutant wants the first hit up in Origin II
At 31, Matt Prior will become one of the oldest debutants in State of Origin history on Sunday night.
He’s been called up to replace the injured Reagan Campbell-Gillard as the Blues look to wrap up the series at ANZ Stadium.
He joins Alan Jones ahead of his first training session since hearing the news, admitting he was “pretty shocked to get the call-up”.
“I was coming off the field on Saturday night after Brisbane and the CEO pulled me aside and said I’d made the team.
“I had to look at him a couple of times to make sure he wasn’t joking.”
The sandy-haired workhorse admits he didn’t grow up dreaming of playing Origin, in fact, he never even wanted to play rugby league.
“Not as a kid, nah. I grew up on the coast down at Thirroul and all I ever wanted to really do was be a surfer.
“Probably wanted to be a professional surfer but I wasn’t good enough and I was a little bit better at football so I went down that path instead.”
As for Sunday night, Prior says he’d love to take the first hit up off the kick-off.
