New guide connects residents dealing with social isolation living in high-rises

Michael McLaren

A new Macquarie University guide is helping connect residents with their neighbors in high-rise buildings.

Nearly half of Sydney’s apartments are currently high-density buildings and many residents are overcoming loneliness and isolation.

Senior Lecturer in Geography and Planning in the Macquarie School of Social Sciences Dr Miriam Williams told Deborah Knight, the project recommends powerful ways to connect people through an “asset-based community development”.

“There’s weekly BBQs with different people… there are book clubs.”

The project plan also encourages governments and developers to promote key design principles to support residents.
