Muslim reformist calls for separation of mosque and state

A Muslim reformist is advocating for the separation of mosque and state to bring Islam into the 21st century.

Dr Zuhdi Jasser, the founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, is currently on a speaking tour of Australia.

Dr Jasser is a practising Muslim who grew up in the US and served in the Navy for 11 years.

He tells Alan Jones his parents, Syrian refugees who fled their homeland, taught him to be patriotic.

“I grew with a passion for loving America, and felt there was a duty to serve.

“My family taught me that the only thing I’d ever want to die for is the United States.”

He says Muslims need to stand up to the Islamic establishment to help prevent radicalisation.

“The end goal is to develop a new Sharia, a new Islamic interpretation of law that’s in the 21st century.

“The first step is the separation of mosque and state, the belief that we as Muslims reject any Islamic state identity.”
