Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard is urging people to adopt a simple approach to improving their mental health.

The Beyond Blue Chairwoman says she managed the stresses of political life by taking time out every day.

Ms Gillard tells Deborah Knight the small moments can make a big difference.

“In my life… one of those common sense kind of tips is even on the busiest days to just find a few minutes, three minutes, five minutes, for a bit of timeout.

“Whether it’s speaking to a loved one on the phone, casting your eyes over an easy-read novel, doing a crossword puzzle.

“Whatever it is that appeals to you, but something that gives you a mental break from the thing that is inducing the stress your life.”
