Tomorrow When The War Began author John Marsden has penned Take Risks, a memoir containing his philosophy on education.

The beloved children’s writer is also an educator himself; headmaster at an experimental Victorian school named Candlebark he established after realising he was becoming ‘more and more bored’ by modern teenagers.

“‘Take risks’ is the kind of secret motto of the school – not so secret anymore!

“We don’t mean by that ‘be reckless’, but we love to see kids climbing trees, and ride bikes and skateboards.

“One of the things that’s happened in Australia in my lifetime is a gradual paralysis, where we now have bureaucrats running the country with such cold-blooded efficiency and such pedantry.”
