‘It’s unmatched, alright’: Chris Smith slams ‘pathetic’ AGL drought donation

Major companies, sporting teams and every day Australians have been rallying together to raise much-needed funds for our drought-stricken farmers.

The Commonwealth Bank has donated $2 million to drought relief and Bunnings is holding fund-raising sausage sizzles nation-wide.

10-year-old primary school student Jack Berne even raised over $50,000 with his Fiver for a Farmer cause.

With the entire state of New South Wales now drought-declared, every dollar is important.

But Chris Smith is pointing the finger at energy giant AGL for their contribution after the company recorded a $1.6 billion profit this financial year.

“You’d think that when they’ve announced a donation to the drought relief it’d be something pretty special,” Chris says.

“No, it’s $20,000.

“It’s unmatched, alright. In terms of how ungenerous and pathetic it is.”

When crunching the numbers, Chris finds AGL’s donation amounts to 0.00125 per cent of their profit.

“I bet we’ve got so many of our farmers who have been struggling to pay their AGL power bills.

“It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if they’d had to make different decisions about what they can and can’t do to help their farm because of the next power bill and AGL thinks a lousy $20,000 is good enough?”
