‘It’s remarkable’ – John Stanley unearths his first 2GB broadcast from 1926
2GB Nights host John Stanley has finally put the jokes about his radio longevity to rest. He’s unearthed a restored audio clip from the station’s launch back in 1926!
“They’ve been spending the last couple of weeks amusing themselves by declaring that I was one of the people that was on air on day one when 2GB went to air in 1926,” he said.
“So I thought, well, I’m not going to disappoint them.”
Naturally, the spoof episode was packed with old-school complaints. Callers groaned about the noise and cost of the Harbour Bridge build, and a local horse-saddle salesman boldly declared automobiles a “passing fad,” while a group of retired engineers insisted the bridge arches would never meet in the middle.
To cap it off, a young Stanley even offered listeners movie tickets to catch the latest Buster Keaton film.
“It’s remarkable hearing yourself 100 years down the track,” Stanley joked.
“They asked, I delivered.”
