‘It was surreal’: Trump and Kim Jong-un strike denuclearisation deal
In a moment history will no doubt remember, US President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un have signed a commitment to work towards the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.
The long-awaited summit wrapped up in Singapore yesterday, with many commenting on the good rapport between the two leaders.
“It was almost an outer-body experience,” says The Australian’s Cameron Stewart.
“It’s just remarkable that we get the zillionaire capitalist American leader and the Stalinist dictator striking a rapport that was really very obvious.”
Stewart outlined the agreement, which is essentially three-pronged.
“The Americans are giving rewards in a series, like a series of carrots,” Stewart explains.
“The first carrot is we stop war games immediately. That will please North Korean and encourage them to start the (denuclearisation) process. The second was the future possibility of reducing the 32,000 American troops in South Korea, Trump gloated on that one. The third one is lifting the economic sanctions, which is most important to North Korea.”
“That is not going to happen until he’s convinced a nuclear bomb will not work, even if they wanted it to.”
