National Australia Bank’s Chief Economist warns the government needs to do more to stimulate the economy and argues the tax cut package is not enough.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has said he will not put the budget surplus at risk as Australia fights to maintain their AAA rating.

The latest monthly survey from the NAB shows there is no growth in business confidence.

NAB Chief Economist Alan Oster tells Ross Greenwood rate cuts won’t have a significant impact until next year.

“I don’t care about the AAA rating.

“If you sort of let the economy run along, very little wages growth, some deterioration in unemployment, you’re going to blow the budget anyway as soon as commodity prices come back down.

“So you need to do something a bit more forward and you need to do it now.”
