Federal Health Minister acknowledges more work needs to be done to improve access to private health insurance.

NIB Managing Director Mark Fitzgibbon has proposed Medicare be abolished and private health insurance be made compulsory.

Health Minister Greg Hunt has rejected the idea, insisting the government is “committed” to Medicare.

But he tells Steve Price they are focusing on producing reforms to make private health insurance more accessible.

“We want to make sure we continue to drive down those cost pressures.

“Patients and doctors… both sides are going to come very shortly with proposals to give a better outcome for the patients, but it will also make private health more affordable again.”
