Roads Minister Melinda Pavey says it will take a “couple of months” to rectify an issue which has seen farmers dudded for decades.

The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party has accused the state government of sitting on its hands, despite knowing about an issue ripping-off farmers with their vehicle registration.

The Daily Telegraph reports a legislative error 20 years ago meant farmers have been wrongly denied a discount they’re entitled to.

Thousands of New South Wales farmers have been overcharged since 1998 and the Berejiklian government could now owe them over $30 million.

The Roads Minister tells Ray Hadley the issue is “a complicated error” and could take a “couple of months” to sort out.

“We’re trying to work through this in an honest way, in a decent way and not raise expectations.”

Ms Pavey says the government has “never tried to be tricky” and farmers have been overcharged because of an “unintended consequence” of old legislation.

Member for Orange Phil Donato was the first to raise the issue in parliament, telling Ray the government has been sitting on the issue for far too long.

“At this time, in these conditions, we all know the extent which our farmers are suffering,” the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers member says.

“Farmers need all the support they can get. They don’t deserve to be ripped off and, you know, if they deserve to be reimbursed… the government should reimburse them this money.”
