Flamin’ hell | Before he was Alf, Ray Meagher had a very different career

Before he appeared on our screens as the beloved ‘Alf’ on Home and Away, Alan Jones knew Ray Meagher in a very different light.

After more than 30 years on the hit soap, Ray is in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving actor in an Australian show.

But well before he ever thought about acting, Ray and Alan became good friends through Queensland rugby.

Alan revealed Ray once performed a hilarious stint at a children’s pantomime with a couple of his teammates.

“I thought they looked a bit funny those theatrical people,” Ray laughs.

“Somebody pulled out just before the thing opened and they said ‘You’re in! You’re in!’… as the rear end of a pantomime horse!”

It was this moment that started Ray on the path to becoming one of Australia’s most recognisable and loved actors.

“As these people would come on and give their all for the audience I’d be subconsciously marking them out of 10 thinking… I could do better than that!”
