The Finance Minister insists the Coalition can still win back the trust of the Australian people before the federal election.

Mathias Cormann says he hopes the federal budget will help restore confidence in the government.

But he’s refusing to be drawn on whether the budget was designed for an election victory.

“When we came into government the economy was weakening, unemployment was rising, and the budget position was rapidly deteriorating.

“We submit ourselves to the judgement of the Australian people, but we do believe that there is an opportunity for us to win the trust and the confidence of the Australian people again.”
