Citizenship ceremonies allowed to be held either side of Australia Day

Councils will now have more flexibility on when they can hold citizenship ceremonies.

Some councils were refusing to conduct events on the 26th of January out of respect to Indigenous Australians, but rules were introduced to stop them.

The ceremony window now covers the 23rd to the 29th of January.

Shadow Minister for Immigration Dan Tehan told Luke Grant the day should be all about Australians coming together to celebrate the country.
