Castlemaine currency project launched in an effort to boost town’s economy
A group of the town’s artists from Castlemaine in central Victoria have launched their own clay currency.
The clay currency is called “silver wattle” which represents a native plant.
Roughly $10,000 has been created in two denominations: One version is embroidered with the number 1, which is equivalent in value to $10, and the other is 5, which is worth $50.
Artist Dale Cox told Deborah Knight the “whole idea” of the local currency is so that it’s spent in the town only.
“The money stays here … it’s all about that idea of building community resilience.”
