Cashless welfare card shows early success

Article image for Cashless welfare card shows early success

The controversial cashless welfare card trial has proven effective in remote indigenous communities.

A third of people who participated in the trial reported they had saved more money.

Jacinta Price, a prominent indigenous leader in Alice Springs, tells Chris Kenny the new system is making positive changes.

“The BasicsCard in the Northern Territory is working for so many indigenous people.

“We interviewed over 1000 people and the vast majority were pleased because they could budget, pay their bills and have food leftover for the kids.”

Ms Price says the ultimate goal is to get people off welfare payments and into employment.

“This is not earned money, this is taxpayers money. Ultimately what we want to see is people getting off welfare and into employment.”
