Berejiklian ICAC inquiry: Investigative journalist analyses Maguire phone taps

The ICAC inquiry into former premier Gladys Berejiklian has heard conflicting accounts of the nature of her secret relationship with Daryl Maguire.

Ms Berejiklian was heard in tapped phone conversations promising to “throw money at Wagga Wagga”, the electorate formerly held by Mr Maguire.

The scandalised former Wagga Wagga MP also testified that his relationship with Ms Berejiklian was serious enough for the pair to discuss marriage and having children.

Sydney Morning Herald investigative journalist Kate McClymont told Jim Wilson the Commission’s decision to rule the private details in the public interest was an important one.

“You need to know what kind of relationship are we talking about, because the last time around we just had that there was a close personal friendship.

“But Daryl Maguire saying today there was talk of marriage … takes it to a different level.

“It might also produce a few problems for earlier evidence that Gladys Berejiklian has given.”
