The state government is formally unveiling an overhaul to the way schools teach Maths and English. 

The new curriculum for years three to 10 will explicitly focus on grammar, punctuation and sentence structure.

Grammar and punctuation expert Deb Doyle told Deborah Knight the overhaul is “totally necessary and desperately needed”.

The NSW syllabus refresh follows dismal NAPLAN results this year, which saw the literacy skills of teenage boys plummet to record lows.

“Since 1972 we haven’t had the systematic teaching of grammar at any level of schooling primary or secondary.”
