Is the humble Aussie pub at risk of going extinct?

Over the past three years alone, more than 70 pubs have been shut down and turned into cafes, shops and even homes.

The latest establishment facing the axe is Paddington’s iconic Four In Hand hotel on Sutherland Street.

At its peak under celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge, the pub was heaving with locals, foodies and tourists coming for a visit.

Now it’s up for sale for $6 million, expected to be turned into a residential property.

Sydney University Urban & Regional Planning Expert Peter Phibbs tells Ben Fordham the traditional Aussie pub is invaluable to communities.
