Four steps to making a genuine apology

Phil O'Neil

Phil speaks with strategic psychotherapist Bronwyn Penhaligon on the power of a genuine apology.

Many struggle with apologizing—either avoiding it or making excuses. A true apology is simple, honest, and acknowledges the impact of your actions. When done right, it can mend relationships, rebuild trust, and bring closure.

Bronwyn shares her four-step formula for an effective apology:

  1. Acknowledge – “I’m sorry for [specific action].”
  2. Show empathy – “I understand it made you feel [impact].”
  3. Take responsibility – “It was my mistake, and I own it.”
  4. Offer a solution – “Here’s what I’ll do differently.”

Keep it genuine, avoid blame-shifting, and most importantly—mean it.
