EXCLUSIVE: “Change the Date” debate enters our schools

Chris O'Keefe

Fresh concerns have been raised over whether kids are being fed too much politics in Sydney schools after a concerned grandparent brought forward an example of ‘persuasive writing’ surrounding the Australia Day debate.

In the example shared with Chris O’Keefe, originating from a Year 5 student in a Western Sydney public school, the piece of writing includes the following statements: “January 26th is a dark day in history. It is not a day to celebrate”.

The piece then proceeds to state: “To continue to celebrate Australia Day on this date is a clear sign of racism towards Indigenous Australians”.

This situation has prompted Chris to question whether politics are being imposed on children at a young age.
