Grain farmers are unable to plant the winter crop as tractors across Australia and New Zealand have come to a halt, following satellite GPS signal failures.

The satellite failure on Monday was grim news for farmers, who were busy taking advantage of optimal planting conditions for crops including wheat, canola, oats, barley and legumes.

Satellite Expert, Professor Andrew Dempster, told Deborah Knight that farmers “can’t do the basic work”.

“Thankfully it has been fixed, but it’s pretty concerning for a lot of farmers who rely on that one satellite.”
