Paleontologists have excavated Australia’s first head and associated body of a 100-million-year-old long-necked marine reptile.

The team traveled to the remote site to collect the fossil of an elasmosaur, which is a plesiosaur that co-existed with dinosaurs.

Dr. Espen Knutsen from the Museum of Tropical Queensland told Deborah Knight he was contacted by a Western Queensland station owner with news of the discovery.

“It was very exciting, as we have spent many, many years trying to find a fossil like this from Australia.”
