The co-creator of Monty Python believes the success of the hit comedy show was all about timing.

The sketch first aired on the BBC in 1969, with 45 episodes being made over four series.

Eric Idle told Deborah Knight filming the show for colour television was vital to draw in a worldwide audience.

“We were right at the start of the digital revolution, which was a big reason for the show’s popularity.”
