Peter Dutton has accused the Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury of “taking advantage” of the Queen’s death.

Andrew Leigh earlier this week said while Australian coins will be updated with King Charles III’s effigy, a decision has not been made on changing the $5 note.

He said there would be a conversation about having a First Nations Australian, possibly Vincent Lingiari, on the note instead of the new King.

That’s despite standard protocol requiring the monarch to appear on the lowest denomination note, Ray Hadley says.

“It’s trying to take advantage of the circumstances we’re in at the moment,” the Liberal Party leader said.

“I’d be surprised if the Prime Minister supported Andrew Leigh, I’d be disappointed if he did.

“At the moment, we’ve got an arrangement which is in place and to rewrite history, as you say, is pretty odd from Dr Leigh.”
