Happy 96th birthday 2GB!
Today marks 96 years since 2GB first went to air.
The first broadcast was at 8.00pm on August 23, 1926 from Adyar Hall in Sydney.
In 1933, 2GB became the first Australian station to play transcription records. with the world’s largest transcribed record library at the time.
In 1940, the station became the largest producer of radio drama programs in the Southern Hemisphere.
2GB was originally owned and run by the Theosophical Society and has had many different owners and content over the years – from music to radio dramas, sport and eventually News Talk.
In 1957, 2GB became the first Australian radio station to air news bulletins on the hour, every hour, during its broadcast day.
The call sign of 2GB was selected in honour of Italian philosopher Giodano Bruno – much admired by the Theosophists.
2GB’s original frequency was 950 kHz, it moved to 870 in 1935 and then finally to 873 in 1978.
Thank you to all our listeners for making 2GB the most widely listened-to radio station in Sydney.
