Nine-year-old’s maths problem has Deb Knight stumped

Michael McLaren

2GB listener Noel has emailed Afternoons with this tricky maths problem from his nine-year-olds’ maths Olympiad:

There is a total of 34 chickens & rabbits in a yard.  There are 34 heads & 74 legs.  How many chickens and how many rabbits are there?

The puzzle had Deborah night stumped, while Afternoons team members Harnsle and Jacob nailed the question using a mix of algebra and spreadsheets.

The call is out for 2GB listeners to test their wits!
