GPs ditch bulk billing as system threatens to send them broke

Doctors are ditching bulk billing amid calls for an increase to the Medicare rebate.

The Australian Medical Association recommends doctors charge $86 for a standard GP consult while under the current Medicare system a GP earns $39.10.

Healthy LivingĀ host Dr Ross Walker told Ben Fordham doctors can’t afford to bulk bill.

“It’s a very difficult job to be a GP and I think they need to be rewarded for what they do and allow them to give more quality time to their patients.”
