‘I build them, but don’t play them’: Have you heard of this unique job?

Michael McLaren

Pipe organs are a classical musical symphony but what skills are required to work, maintain and restore the instrument?

The pipe organ is a musical instrument that produces sounds through pressurised air within the pipes.

Pipe organ builder from Buzard Workshop Dave Brown, who is currently in the US, told Deborah Knight his skills started in Australia, ” I completed my apprenticeship with a company in Melbourne actually”.

“It’s a wonderful trade and a beautiful instrument.

“For a musician, it must be the ultimate challenge.

“I build them, but don’t play them.”

Mr Brown said between Thanksgiving and Christmas, “We tune about 200…250 pipe organs all around the world”.
